What is Cafe 939?

In what could be the most interesting new club around town, Berklee College of Music has opened Cafe 939, "a state-of-the-art, all-ages, student-run music venue and coffee house" at 939 Boylston Street, adjacent to the Cactus Club. The booze-free joint - yes, that's the down side - intends to showcase "emerging student talent, local artists, as well as national acts seeking a more intimate, personal space in which to perform and connect with their fans." The coffeehouse menu has apparently been on a soft opening since the beginning of the year, but now they're ready to tout their lineup of rock, jazz, folk, world, hip-hop and what have you. Expect plenty o' jazz, though, at least more than you'll find in the mix at rock clubs around town.

The 200-person capacity concert venue, featuring high-end PA and lighting systems, video and DVD capabilities, and flexible seating, is equipped for a wide variety of performances. Music business/management majors are responsible for the booking, marketing, publicity, and promotion of all shows in this almost completely student-run operation. Berklee students also work as ushers, box office clerks, and in the stage crew.

The coffee house, open for business since December 2007, features a sleek, modern design concept, a relaxed atmosphere with a number of large, comfortable sofas and chairs, and a Berklee history room with walls covered in old photographs and materials chronicling the college's past. The menu includes a variety of coffees, teas, sandwiches, paninis, salads, bagels, muffins, cakes, and other snacks. The coffee house is open Monday–Tuesday, 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–11:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:30 a.m.–11:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–9:00 p.m.
